The John Ruskin Prize 2026: £9,500 in Prizes – Theme ‘Not for Present Delight’

adminArt & DesignOpportunities2 weeks ago9 Views

The John Ruskin Prize is open to entries from artists, designers and makers – amateur or professional – from anywhere in the world.

This year’s theme, Not for Present Delight, asks a profound question: in a time defined by environmental urgency and social inequality, what does it mean to create with an awareness of consequence? Must art serve a purpose beyond itself, or can it exist simply for pleasure, independent of moral or social obligation?

Four winners will receive prizes totalling £9,500, with a shortlist exhibition at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London.

Deadline: Tuesday 17 November 2026, 5pm.

The Theme: Not for Present Delight

In The Seven Lamps of Architecture, John Ruskin urged architects and masons to build as much with the future in mind as for the present day. The 9th John Ruskin Prize expands this idea across the fine and applied arts, opening space for reflection on how creative practices might carry forward-thinking intention, responsibility, and care.

The exhibition welcomes work that functions as a tool for change or critique, while also posing the challenge: can art exist simply for pleasure?

Artists, designers and craftspeople are invited to question the role of the maker today – considering what it means to understand the world not only as it is, but as something we can actively shape.

All work submitted must be an interpretation and artistic expression of the theme Not for Present Delight.

About The John Ruskin Prize

The John Ruskin Prize was founded by The Guild of St. George in 2012, under the administrative umbrella of The Big Draw, supported by the Trinity Buoy Wharf Trust, and managed by Parker Harris.

Initially attracting conventional painting and drawing, it has evolved to recognise work which, whilst responding to Ruskinian principles, does not necessarily fit into any neatly-defined category. The prize has honoured painters, printmakers, designers, sculptors, photographers and a wide range of craftspeople.

In his lifetime, Ruskin was primarily famed not as an artist but as a writer, critic, outspoken social commentator and inspiring public lecturer. For him:

“The greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something, and say what it saw in a plain way.”

Artist Responsibilities (If Shortlisted – UK Artists)

  • Securely packing works for transportation to the exhibition venue

  • Independently insuring works for transportation and exhibition

  • Framing and inclusion of hanging fixings/installation instructions

The Organisers will supply an artwork collection point at Trinity Buoy Wharf.
