Wells Art Contemporary: Curatorial Assistant Bursary for Recent Graduates – Deadline 2 June

A unique curatorial opportunity has opened at one of the UK’s most spectacular exhibition venues. Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) is offering a paid Curatorial Assistant bursary for a recent graduate – and the deadline to apply is 2 June 2026.

Over a three-month period, the successful applicant will help oversee the selection and installation of site-specific works forming part of the annual WAC exhibition at Wells Cathedral – a breathtaking medieval landmark in the heart of Somerset.

Bursary: £1,000 | Deadline: 2 June 2026, 5pm

A Launchpad for Curatorial Careers

This is not an internship. It is a professional bursary designed for someone who has graduated since 2024 in curatorial practice, art history, museum studies, or a related discipline.

The 2025 Curatorial Assistant, Maddie Keates, describes her experience:

“My time as Assistant Curator for Wells Art Contemporary was incredibly fulfilling and captured everything contemporary art should be. From exploring the remarkable setting of the historic cathedral to working with artists presenting exciting new work in such a unique space, the experience was truly special.

As my first role after completing my MA in Art History and Museum Curating, I could not have received a warmer welcome. I developed a broad range of practical skills and grew into a highly adaptable and collaborative team member.

Although Wells Art Contemporary is an international art competition, it retains the charm and spirit of England’s smallest city throughout. I would highly recommend this role to anyone beginning a career in the curatorial field.”

Deadline: Tuesday 2 June 2026, 5pm

Why This Role Matters

Wells Art Contemporary is an international art competition that takes place within the extraordinary setting of Wells Cathedral – a Gothic masterpiece and one of the most architecturally significant cathedrals in England.

The site-specific works are a highlight of the annual exhibition, responding directly to the cathedral’s architecture, light, and atmosphere. As Curatorial Assistant, you will be helping to shape which works are selected and how they are installed.

This is not a desk-based role. You will be in the cathedral, working with artists, installers, and curators to bring ambitious contemporary art into a sacred medieval space.

What the Selection Panel Will Look For

Based on the role description, successful applicants will likely demonstrate:

  • Curatorial judgment – an ability to assess site-specific proposals

  • Communication skills – writing clear exhibition texts and liaising with artists

  • Practical aptitude – willingness to be hands-on during installation

  • Reliability – availability on all required dates

  • Curiosity – genuine interest in the intersection of contemporary art and historic spaces

Recent graduates are strongly encouraged to apply – this role is designed specifically for you.

  • Did you graduate since 2024 in curatorial practice, art history, museum studies, or a related field?

  • Are you available for the selection meeting on 7 July 2026?
